Totally Turning Symposium 2026 – Saratoga Springs, NY

I will be a regional demonstrator at the Totally Turning Symposium, March 28 & 29, 2026.  My demonstration is titled Fun With Spindles.

This will be a fast-moving demonstration focused on spindle turning techniques and tools, resulting in a series of small objects.  Each turned object will build on techniques demonstrated in preceding segment.  Demonstration will see completion of; spin-tops, miniature spin-top, freehand sphere, small hollow vessel, and a multi-axis spice spoon.  This is a skill building session for all levels of turners, and will emphasize the importance of practice as a path to perfection.

Atlantic Shore Woodturners Howell, NJ – Demonstration  April 14, 2026

I will be doing a demonstration on turning tops

In this demonstration we will employ the simple top as a vehicle for fun, creativity, and disciplined repetition of fine detail.  Turning techniques include effective and efficient use of the detail gouge and 1/4” bowl gouge.  Guidelines for sharpening these tools will also be covered.  We will begin with basic design considerations and physical constraints.  Optimal cutting techniques yield a surface requiring little sanding, and as we all know, less sanding means more fun.  Variations in form, proportion, ornamentation and surface treatment allow each top to be unique.  Some popular design variations will be demonstrated too.

Long Island Woodturners Northport NY – Demonstration  April 18, 2026

I will be doing a demonstration on Turning small and very small hollow vessels

The objective of this demonstration is to turn a small hollow vessel and a very small hollow vessel while discussing tools, techniques, and design considerations.  The small vessel will be turned from a green wood blank with side grain orientation.  So, how small is small?  The resulting piece will be around the size of an orange.  The very small vessel will be turned from a dry blank in spindle orientation.  The resulting vessel will be smaller than an egg.

Past Events...

My first time at this show was a success.  I met lots of new people who are fans and collectors of turned wood art, and sent some of my new favorite pieces to their new homes.  As a displaying artist, I found the setting to be ideal.  I will be back.
